The halogens are 5 non-metallic elements found in group 17 of the periodic table. The term “halogen” means “salt-former” and compounds containing halogens are called “salts”. The halogens exist, at room temperature, in all three states of matter:
Solid - Iodine, Astatine Liquid - Bromine Gas - Fluorine, Chlorine.

Halogen Usage in Coates Products:
All Coates products are 100% free from Astatine, Iodine and Bromine.
Fluorine's can be present in some Curtain Coat formulations as part of an additive. Typical value less than 650 ppm. An Alternative raw material without fluorine is currently under evaluation.

This leaves Chlorine Containing Compounds: Chlorine is contained mainly at a molecular level in the” Green” pigment, to the best of our knowledge, of all suppliers masks – it is almost impossible to get a true green pigment that does not contain chlorine. Typical levels for green products are around 1300-4000 ppm dependant on colour strength. Chlorine is not contained to a high level in other colours like blue, yellow, red etc. This means that pretty much all non-green products from Coates can be classified as Halogen Free, it also explains why many products sold in the market as Halogen Free are blue. By careful selection of the pigments, keeping true-green content low and the use of a mixture of pigments to form a green colour it is possible to produce a Green (or more truly described as Yellow- Green) halogen free soldermask.

NB - The colours (non-green) products in Coates XV501T-4 range can also be used for halogen free applications. Typical halogen content for these products is <400ppm.
