SunCareTM Recognition for UK Base Plant
Earlier this summer, the Coates Circuit Products UK base manufacturing plant at Midsomer Norton, Bath, won a major accolade in recognition of its success in our drive for the highest environmental standards. Between 1997 and 2001, ISO 14001 registrations have been achieved at our three principle global locations, in the UK, USA and Germany.
SunCare - a combined set of policies procedures and standards for Health, Safety and the Environment.
SunCare - a common standard globally for all Sun Chemical companies.
SunCare - achieving standards and improving continually.

Not withstanding success in the drive to gain accreditation to this important internationally accepted standard, Coates Circuit Products has readily taken up the challenge laid down to all subsidiary inkmaking businesses of US based parent, Sun Chemical. In a comprehensive program entitled 'SunCare', aimed at providing a consistent standard within a common management system, in environmental health and safety, factory sites are audited for performance against a wide range of criteria.

The audit complements and assists towards ISO 14000, where this has not already been gained. Criteria include below-industry-average lost-time accidents, provision of safety training and education, implementation of the program's safety and environmental guidelines, sharing of knowledge and benchmarking, as well as achieving objectives for improvement in both environmental and safety performance.

The initial audit is followed by a second, at which improvement must be shown, and thereafter on a regular basis at around 18 month intervals, resulting in an action plan that sets new goals for the next period. In this way, monitoring is on-going, and the effect is one of continual improvement. Reports so far are that customers are not only expressing interest in the achievements that result from SunCare, but in looking at how they can commence similar schemes and in suggesting further improvements within SunCare.

The SunCare program has had a head start in Europe, where five out of some 16 sites have now attained the standard. It was particularly gratifying for us that the UK's base manufacturing site at Midsomer Norton not only gained its SunCare Award this summer, but that in the assesment by Sun Chemical environmental management, Coates Circuit Products not only achieved the 'outstanding' category, but gained the highest score yet given, of 96%! The Award to the Midsomer Norton site was received by Martin Harris, Manufacturing Manager, who acknowledged the contribution made by all personnel. Midsomer Norton¹s experience is proving invaluable to Coates Circuit Products, Germany, which has commenced the process toward SunCare, gaining an Œexcellent¹ catagory in its first award. Adoption of SunCare shows that Coates Circuit Products works to the highest standards within the industry, set by the industry leader, and is ready to face the challenge of environmental care maintaining the safest possible places of work.
