Container Decorating Symposium

Steve Presutto, Global Marketing Manager,
addressing the Las Vegas Symposium

Coates Screen sponsored a comprehensive symposium designed for the direct-print plastic and glass container market at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Industry speakers covered a variety of topics relevant to today's container decorator. Topics such as screen making, colour control, colour management, colour specification, advances in screen printing presses, market trends and the latest ink technology were discussed.
Feedback from the symposium has been extremely positive. Attendees remarked on the value of a symposium strictly for container decorating. This could be the first of many educational seminars Coates Screen will sponsor.  With the switch to UV for container decorating, Coates Screen products are again emerging as market leaders. A range of three single package UV inks has been developed for container decorators.

Monocure Plus XTC has excellent adhesion to treated polyethylene, treated polypropylene and PET containers. In addition to fast cure speeds, Monocure Plus XTC has good water and chemical resistance, excellent intercoat adhesion, optimised rheology and no "screen drip through". Formulated to be NVP and HDDA free, Monocure Plus XTC is suitable for global use. Designed to be used as a single package ink, it can also be used as a two pack to further enhance water and chemical resistance. Monocure Ultra UVC has similar features to Monocure Plus, but Ultra offers advantages in chemical resistance and cure speeds. Monocure Ultra does have better chemical resistance than Monocure Plus, but is more resistant to aggressive alcohols such as SD alcohol. Monocure Ultra UVC does contain NVP and HDDA which limits it sale.

Both of these products are available in the C-Mix 2000 Colour System. The pigments used in these inks have been selected with the needs of the container decorators in mind. The yellows, oranges and reds are cleaner, brighter colours than the standard C-Mix 2000 colour.

Both inks are ideal for use with our IDS dispensers and Formulator scales.  The IDS offers significant advantages over competitive equipment, and container decorators will benefit greatly from its features.

Direct printing on glass has also become easier thanks to new Crystal GLS.  Introduced last year, this ink has had success in many print rooms throughout the world. Crystal is a world choice UV curing screen ink formulated for printing on glass and ceramic.

Crystal GLS can be printed on sheet glass as for gaming machines or decorated mirrors, glass containers such as wine/beer bottles and medical vials, and ceramic objects such as drinking mugs. When fully cured, Crystal has excellent resistance to water condensation and low-temperature water immersion. This can be further improved by the addition of an adhesion promoter.

Crystal is supplied as 14 blending colours, which, with black, white and clear can be mixed together to match almost any colour. A wide range of opaque and four-colour process inks is available for first-surface and back-lit applications.
