Screen in Credit
|
|
|
Shown here is a new Oasys Laminator
in use at the UK Coates Screen development facility to produce laminated
credit cards for laboratory purposes.
This equipment is able to accurately reproduce
production conditions using precise control of heat, pressure and time.
Coates has extensive experience of manufacture of many types of security
inks for all the various printing processes, and is used to satisfying the
strict controls that apply. Not surprisingly, for instance, a manufacturer
of security inks has to gain formal approval for both its quality and
security procedures, and has to prove security inks operations meet tight
internal procedures. For obvious reasons, banknote inks are not offered
for sale to anyone with access to a printing press!

Coates Screen plays its part by
marketing various screen printing products used in the manufacture
of credit cards. Solvent based laminating screen inks and water based
adhesives are currently the standard products for PVC credit card
manufacture. The industry has been waiting a long time to adopt screen
printing UV curing technology but normal UV curing screen inks are not
sufficiently thermoplastic for PVC lamination. Until recently many thought
it impossible to develop a suitable product.
With the aid of equipment such as the
laboratory Oasys Laminator Coates Screen has developed a range of UV
curing laminating inks called Solarsmart SSM Series. Past attempts at this
had only achieved inks with barely adequate low bond strength and an
unacceptably small operating window. Solarsmart SSM Series now allow
easy production and amazing bond strength. Solarsmart SSM
performance is so good it actually exceeds requirements of the industry¹s
standard for Identification Cards, ISO/IEC 7810:1995(E). A smart ink
indeed.
