Coates Screen to obtain ISO 14001

It¹s tough at the top, and does mean you have to give significant attention to the standards and practices that demonstrate leadership and professionalism. As a world class supplier of screen printing inks, Coates Screen has decided to certify its Environmental Management System, initially at all principal manufacturing locations, to the ISO14001 standard. At Coates, we take a broad view of our relationships, not only with our customers but with our neighbours and the communities in which we  work.

This initiative will demonstrate that environmental awareness and compliance are core principles of our business philosophy and play a significant role in our day-to-day business. Piloting this work is Coates operation at St Charles, USA, where registration is expected by the end of May 2001.

ISO 14001 is an international standard that defines an environmental management system, just as ISO 9001 is an international standard which defines a system of quality management. The standard has three principal requirements: legislative conformance, identification of environmental impact and continual improvement. In the US, this demanding standard has been adopted so far by only about 750 companies.

As part of our continual improvement effort, Coates has undertaken a paper reduction and recycling plan at both of its US factories. We will be initiating formal programs to reduce the amount of waste solvent we generate, to further strengthen our spill prevention program and to reduce waste in all departments, including production. US readers who would like any further information on this initiative, are invited to please contact Robert Vail, National Quality Manager, on + (1) 630-587-5229.
