Large posters such as those used for
city lights or even larger multi-sectional posters are still produced by
screen-printing to a large extent. It is a market shared with offset
printing, and for very short runs, with digital systems. While there are
many poster printers working with modern offset machines that are also
efficient for smaller amounts, much large-format screen-printing
equipment is sold and used for these applications. Such large-format
screen equipment is not only suitable for paper posters but also for
multi-colour printing onto various plastics; a flexibility that keeps the
screen process very much in the running for this business.
At Coates Screen we thought therefore that it would
be very suitable to develop a UV 4-colour process ink system specifically
for the highly competitive area of poster printing. These new inks are
Adprint APP or the flash-cure version, Adprint FPP.
Both ink types were developed primarily for
optimum results on poster and billboard papers, as well as boards. For
indoor advertising Aprint is also suitable for PVC substrates. Adprint
inks are best printed using a 150 polyester fabric. They are highly
reactive and can be processed on high-speed multi-colour printing
equipment without any problem. Usually Adprint APP inks require a curing
energy of approx. 100 mj/cm2. Adprint FPP requires 2 to 3 flashes. Due to
this high reactivity, exact register printing of Adprint on the more
sensitive paper substrates is possible. Adprint inks are formulated to
match the economics of poster printing and show a medium light fastness,
resulting in very brilliant process prints. Importantly, Adprint prints
applied on suitable large poster paper do not show the minute cracking
some inks demonstrate, when folded.
